  The Play

  Angela, middle-aged and recently divorced from her husband of many years, is navigating unfamiliar territory. She learned that her husband had been having an affair with a much younger woman, her adult daughter tells her that she was the only person who didn’t know about the affair, which has been going on for a long time.

  
  

  Alone with only her family dog, Axal, for company, Angela embarks on a new chapter of her life. Drive straight down the drive way to staff car park. The Admin block is the building with the blinds. Come through the little gate and up to the second door on your left (near the park bench). Don’t worry, there will be signage (Text Gaz 021453138 if you need help). Please arrive 10 – 15 mins prior to your scheduled audition time to complete documentation and familiarise yourself with the script. Please also prepare a short, up to 3 minute monologue of your choice. You do not need to have memorised this. The Play: The inaugural Pink Hammer Workshop is an absolute disaster. Annabel, Helen, Louise and Siobhan turn up, looking forward to learning carpentry skills from a pioneering, female furniture maker… but instead they find Woody, an out-of-work, disgruntled builder who’s less than impressed to find four sheilas amongst his claw hammers. Not the sort of women to back down from a challenge, the group convince Woody to teach them the tricks of the trade in this heart-warming Kiwi comedy that also reveals something deeper about human relationships. The Cast: (ages indication only) Annabel: Late 40s – 50s.Counsellor in private practice. She also runs the Dickens Book Club. Was an active feminist in the early 80s.Wants to build: a Victorian-style display cabinet for her complete works of Dickens. Louise: 50s. A nurse. Moved home to care for her parents. Has many dark shadows in her life and is easily spooked.Wants to build: a small house one day. Helen: Late 50s – 60s. Prefers horses to people. She has two grown-up sons to different fathers, both of whom were jockeys. She has never married.Wants to build: a coffin. Siobhan: 30. Irish. Lives with her cousin.
